Rarity, asking prices, and sale premiums
| Measure | Meaning | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Trait frequency | How many Apes share the characteristic | Scarcity alone does not establish demand |
| Trait floor | The lowest tracked ask within a matching group | It is an asking price and can rely on one listing |
| Sale premium | A completed sale compared with a market reference | Other traits, timing and sample size also matter |
A rare trait may have barely traded recently, leaving little to compare. A common trait can still appeal to buyers because of how it looks on a particular Ape. Rarity helps describe the collection; recorded sales tell you what buyers have actually paid.
Find Apes with the traits you want
Choose traits in the member Trait Finder to see matching Apes. Open a result to check its valuation and sales history. Start with a broad group, then narrow it if you want to compare a specific combination.
Two Apes with the same fur can have different eyes, clothes, and accessories. If one sells for more, you can't attribute the whole difference to its fur. For the same reason, adding up separate trait premiums is unlikely to give you a reliable price for the complete Ape.
Check the whole Ape's valuation as another point of comparison. Its model explanation and comparable sales can help you see whether the estimate has support beyond one trait.
Which sales make a useful comparison?
Define the trait or combination
Decide whether you're comparing one trait or a combination. The narrower the group, the fewer Apes and recorded sales you may have to work with.
Check the transaction dates
Check when each Ape sold. A sale during a much stronger BAYC market may be a poor guide to today's asking price, even if the traits are similar.
Look at the individual sales
See how many sales the average includes and how far apart their prices are. If there are only a few, one unusually high sale can change the average considerably.
Return to the exact Ape
Compare the Ape's asking price with its valuation range and sales history. Deal Radar can help you find candidates to check.
Trait-pricing questions
Does a rarer Ape always cost more?
No. Buyers may prefer the appearance of a more common Ape, and the available listings can affect what they are willing to pay. Rarity alone won't settle the price.
Can I compare a trait's floor with the BAYC floor?
Yes. Check that the prices cover the same venues and were recorded around the same time. The gap tells you how sellers have priced those listings. To find out what buyers paid, look at completed sales. See the floor-price guide.
Can I put a fixed ETH value on a trait?
A fixed price would miss changes in the market and differences between Apes. Use Trait Finder to compare matching Apes, then check their individual valuations and recent sales.
Where can I see how the valuation model performed?
The public performance page compares estimates with actual sale prices. Those estimates were recorded before each sale. You can also check the dates and how many sales are included.
